GATEWAY SCHOOL

The existing structure, previously a health club, was reconfigured to meet the needs of the school: the entry stair was replaced by a ramp; a steel canopy was installed for shelter and to mark the entry; the rear of the building was extended six feet so that all classrooms occupy the window line; a mezzanine office floor was inserted between two existing floors; and a twenty foot high gymnasium built on the roof.
Sectional subtractions between floors enable visual and acoustic continuity: an oculus to the lower level, an oval opening linking the gathering room to the classrooms above, a double-height work area and kitchen, and a viewing mezzanine in the gym encourage social interaction and help make the building intelligible to its inhabitants. 2001

KINDERGARTEN

A two-story entry and circulation link formed by intersecting walls and infilled with glass separates classrooms from office space. This entry component was intended as a reusable typology--a generic link to accommodate future kindergarten programs on six different sites. Sculptural stairs and playful wall perforations reflect the building's role. Sliding interior walls maximize adaptability of spaces, skylights let natural light penetrate the center of the building and exterior louvers mitigate summer heat gain. 1996-97

SECOND STAGE THEATRE

The program: design an alternative to the existing helter-skelter assemblage of tables and chairs used during intermissions for food and beverage distribution. Solution: a retracting steel and glass furniture piece. In the open position a colored glass bar showcases beverage choices while a full-width monitor above follows action on stage; in the closed position a perforated aluminum roll-down shutter seals and protects the bar and its contents. 2003

LYDELL NYC

The New York City headquarters of a thriving gift jewelry company combines showroom and office space, sales, shipping, design, and production spaces on a single 8000 square foot floor. The design places high-traffic showroom and production areas along window walls at either end of the space. Clerestory windows let natural light into offices and the open-plan interior floor. Finishes and materials are concentrated on public spaces, where flush doors conceal principal's offices and product storage. 2007
