ALTGIENICKE

Three 4-story, 8-unit apartment buildings (two different types) comprise part of a much larger urban design scheme for housing on Berlin's periphery. Footprint, floor height, room dimensions and building materials are regulated. Southern exposure is largely glazed, opening to balconies. Northern exposure is treated as a repetitive, silent urban face. 1993-96

Architect of Record: Mussotter Poeverlein, Berlin.
Project Architect: Philippe Baumann

DREILINDEN

Restrictions governing building height required the lower floor to be partially underground. Entry is gained through the rear of the building: the traditional organization of hard street edge and soft garden façade is reversed, opening the building up to the southern exposure. Steel balconies located to the south shade the interior while expanding the living spaces towards the street. 1993-96

KINZIG

A three-lot parcel in East Berlin was the intended site for this speculative mixed-use building. The section was modeled on the Texan garage apartment--a drive beneath the building led to covered parking in the rear, over which hovered additional rental units. Insulated glass expanses on the façade flood the interior with light and air. 1993
